after water from the the san franciscquito creek rose and raced towrd homes. --towards homes...that is where we begin our l with kron-4's j-r stone. who spoke with the city's mayor just a few minutes ago. j-r? >> reporter: i did. at the water levels are down. you can this see in the distance the and san franciscquito creek it was flowing and not quite like a great but more like a river. it was flowing into this river section that the working crews are trying to clean up. on the opposite side of that fence our homes. let me show you video. they have been busy out here for the last one hour working. the goal is to bring in more in san backs

this evening. they wanted to secure this lobby. if they have more rain fall, or more in the coming days it will not be a problem for the homes. total, seven homes had mandatory evacuation's. and even the people in this neighborhood but there was a voluntary evacuation process. everybody with the exception of one home is back. that is good news. no injuries. we spoke with the mayor. short-term solutions, what the levy problems and also long term solutions in the works. >> right now given the conditions you do not want to move the soil around that much. you want to reinforce certain areas, and let the water dry out. we will follow up with a more further, analysis. >> out here live this evening you can deceive the mud. they have cleared out a

lot-you can see >> reporter: that. they are going to bring out some large lights. and sandbags. we also spoke with some people that lived in those homes that we spoke about earlier that are under evaluation. the stormy weather caused serious problems on a road that connects two counties in the east bay hills it was closed for much of the day - while workers fixed the problem.. kron4's haaziq madyun has the story. >> reporter: a major mudslide blocking pinehurst road where the contra costa county border meets with the oakland hillsthe heavy rain over the weekend saturated the hillside bringing down a significant amount of mud early monday morninghuge rocks like this one here landed right in the roadway the california highway

>> nobody wants to listen to victor. >> reporter: flooding left the two lane street, down to one lane. victor doesn't like how cars have to drive in the opposite lane of traffic. >> i have seen it for at least 15 years. people do not know which way to go. it is very dangerous. >> for a 600 families. >> reporter: victor says the problem starts on top of the hill. he claims improper drainage allows water and mud to cascade down causing all this mess. even these wooded barricades can't hold back the damage. that is why he made this video, so people can see what's happening here. he's reached out to the city which promised to fix the problem. >> look at that!, danger. most of that city supervisors told me that they were working on it.

break. asphalt lifted. the water main break.described as major.was reported around 10 am today. 12-inch main was releasing about one-thousand gallons of water per minute. concern a sinkhole could form. people were told to move their cars. aerial shots sky 7 hd about 75 sanbags were stcked in front of one home to prevent flooding. 15 homes are without water. no other homes threatened. the cause is under investigation. >> catherine: the search for a suspected drunk driver who escaped police by jumping into a rain-swollen creek has been called off-- for now. police stopped the man near the college of marin in

ross around 12-30 this morning. they say he ran off - then jumped into the corte madera creek. he swam off - and they lost sight of him. the man hasn't been seen since. >> san jose police have released the name of the man who was stabbed to death at a graduation party friday night. 30-year-old steve bangalan died after being stabbed at a party being held in the office of an insurance agency owned by his cousin -- on oakland road. his death it is the 45th homicide this year in san jose. there are no suspects in custody. >> volunteer firefighters were ambushed today in upstate new york. grant lodes is here with details on the horrifying scene that played out this >> christmas eve, no less a convicted felon morning. a convicted felon is being blamed for these cold blodded killings. volunteer firefighters.responding to a fire scene near rochester new york were shot. tonight two firefighters are dead.two others.hospitalized in serious condition.but

expected to survive. how firefighters were not allowed to even battle the that's because the fire scene quickly turned into a crime saying. >> multiple shots fired multiple philip fire shots -- multiple-fire firefighters- touchdown. scene. right as the volunteer firefightrs were arriving on scene.police say 62-year-old william spangler was perched like a sniper.firing off rounds towards the unsuspecting first responders. two were killed. 43 year old mike chiapperini who also served as the town's police department public information officer. and 19-year-old tomas kachoofka. kachoofka and chiapperini's son were best friends. >> people get up in the middle of the night to put out fires they do not expect to be shot at. >> two other firefighters who were shot are expected to recover. police say before dawn.the suspect, william spengler set a house and car on fire to lure the firefighters.

as soon as they arrived, police say he started shooting. while police were looking for the shooter.the fire spread.engulfing 7 homes. the suspect was eventually found dead near the fire scene.after apparently shooting himself. and he was not even allowed to have a gun. spangler is a convicted felon.he was convicted of beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death with a hammer back in 19-80. spangler served 17 years - and police say it's unclear what his motive was for today's shooting. the town of webster, new york is now mourning. the joy of christmas replaced by pain and grief. >> very difficult... been annulled they are going to have the holidays and the family is not going to have the matter it is devastating. >> devastating. the suspect's home was one of the ones that burned. his sister lived with him.and is unaccounnted for. there is a vigil being held tonight for the fallen firefighters. >> catherine: still ahead at five. six children a/+have been

>> catherine: there's word tonight that veteran actor jack klugman, has died. he died today in los angeles. klugman was probably best known for playing the sloppy sports writer oscar in the 19-70s sitcom the "odd couple". he also played a tough-minded medical examiner in quincy, m.e.," klugman lost his voice to throat cancer in the 1980s but trained himself to speak again. he was 90-years old. >> in national news. a police officer and a bystander were shot and killed in suburban houston this morning. it began when the officer made a traffic stop. the suspect drove away - and later began shooting from a parking lot. police say the man shot and killed a bystander, then fired at the officer who was killed. the suspect was also shot - and is in critical condition. police say they have no idea why he opened fire. >> also in texas.six children were hurt when a gasoline can exploded in a backyard today. the children in the dallas area had been sprinkling gasoline on a fire pit in the town of mckinney. the gasoline can blew up,

burning the children. some were seriously injured. police say adults were inside the house when it happened. a man who had been working on a cell phone tower in spokane washington was left dangling in the air today. he slipped out of a harness and was trapped for nearlya co-worker was able to hang onto him until firefighters arrived. they raised a ladder - and got him down safely. >> some missing hikers have been found on oregon's mount hood. they were out on snow- shoes.and are in good condition tonight. they survived by staying in a warming shelter. the two women and one man called 911 from a cell phone sunday, after getting lost while trying to reach a cabin. >> and a beautiful evening for this christmas eve. some high clouds streaming in and yet another storm system in the pacific headed our way.

expected to continue for the christmas day evening by 7:00 a.m.. with three-quarters of 1 in. of rainfall for the bay area with 1 in.-2 in. at the higher elevations. because the ground is saturated it is not going to take that much for flooding problems. still have something to watch for, tomorrow. 30's in the north bay, 40's by the bay. the hawks in the afternoon will be in the 50s. for most locations with cloudy skies and rain fall on christmas wednesday, sunshine, clouds, showers and gusting winds possibly.

live from the kron 4 news station, this is the kron 4 news.tonight at six. >> catherine: we're tracking storm damage throughout the bay area. this weekend's storm triggered a mudslide in an area bordering contra costa county and oakland. and in richmond - there was flooding. it was a similar scene in east palo alto - where there >> and it's not over. tomorrow - more rain is expected. >> we spoke with the mayor. he is concerned about the levee, and knowing that the saturation level of the soil is a concern. we will have to wait until it dries out before we can deal with

it. our team coverage on the storm damage continues. crews in east palo alto plan to work into the night. trying to make sure there's no more flooding at the san francisquito creek. it was a big problem last night - there was a mudslide today in contra costa county.near the oakland border.on pinehurst road. it was a mess and the road was closed for awhile. drivers were trying to navigate around the mud. scene around 5 this morning. the slide was cleaned up in a few hours. forecast - the public works flooding caused a mess in richmond. a viewer sent us this video of castro ranch road. the two lane street, became one big mess. improper damage from a pipe resident victor hu-sorry fixed. the road is now open to two lanes of traffic. crews used a pump to clear out the caused a large tree branch to fall onto this san francisco gas station. >> this saturation level i came back and. and it is nothing. nothing can be saved. >> this creek forest mandatory evacuations of a least seven homes. today, you can see with mud on the streets. there is one moment

area news. 15 homes in mill valley are still without water tonight. that's after a water main broke, flooding marin avenue. kron 4's reggie kumar tells us if water crews will finish the repairs by christmas morning. >> of american water district as a welder on the scene and to repair a water main break. thousands of gallons of minute permanente were spewing out. this water main break is made of cast iron and is over 60 years old. they believe it cracked because of age it is still under investigation. this is video. the water pressure was so intense it lifted off the pavement. this resident has no water but is that these photographs. >> it was a little bit scary would it not know when the water was shut off about we were glad that they did. there was no damage to the house.

around 12-30 this morning. since. custody. volunteer firefighters were ambushed today in upstate new york. grant lodes is here with scene that played out this morning. a convicted felon cold blodded killings. volunteer fire scene near rochester new york were shot. tonight two firefighters are dead.two others.hospitalized in serious condition.but expected to survive. firefighters were not allowed to even battle the massive fire for nearly six hours this morning. that's because the fire scene quickly turned into a crime scene. right as the volunteer firefightrs were 62-year-old william spangler was perched like a sniper.firing off rounds first responders. two were killed. 43 year old mike chiapperini who also served as the town's police department public information officer. and 19- year-old tomas kachoofka. kachoofka and chiapperini's
